Creative Challenges: Under The Sea Pt. 1 (#1)

Hey everyone! If you’ve been on my blog for a while, you’ll remember I used to do Creative Challenges. It’s a twice weekly challenge created by the wonderful @Cynthia Dawn. Go check her writing blog out 🙂 This challenge where you write a story based on the given prompt. It’s been my only weekly writing thing and I loved it. Then everything slowed down and I eventually stopped. Now it’s back and will hopefully be a frequent thing once again. This won’t be on a certain day, unless you guys would prefer that.  After reading the post, please comment if you would like to see more of these or not. All feedback is accepted!

My Story:

Once night, in the middle of November, the sea turned a strange color. All around, fish and other sea creatures went into complete chaos. As the black billow of color slowly descended downwards, bubbles raised towards the sky. A mermaid swam swiftly out of hiding. She had been in her secret home with her twelve brothers and ten brothers. Add her mom, dad, and pet dolphin Sky, and you had a total of 26 people in one place. Needless to say, Lulu the mermaid’s life was always full of craziness. One thing that hadn’t happened before was this strange billow. All the sea creatures gathered in the Sea Center to discuss what could be happening.

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT WE SHOULD DO?!” Mayor Charles the Clownfish shouted into the seashell he used as a microphone. The sound decreased slightly and Mayor Charles spotted a stray flipper waving furiously.

Yes Shay?” Shay is a yellow seahorse. He’s known for his brilliant algae smoothie.

“I propose we send our swiftest explorers to investigate the billow.” Shay flashed a smile at the crowd.

“What a brilliant idea! Does anyone else have any other ideas?” The Mayor looked around and only saw anxious faces staring back at him. “All right then. We will have a sign up sheet on the announcement billboard in the Town Shell.”

Mayor Charles was relieved someone had actually spoken up. Normally he had to stare at the apprehensive crowd for hours on end. The Mayor was swimming home when he suddenly stopped. A sudden thought had burst into his mind. Nobody named Shay had ever lived in Seaweed Falls before. How had he never heard of this intelligent seahorse? Mayor Charles decided that it had slipped someone’s mind and he continued his journey home.

Meanwhile, behind a rock, came Lulu the mermaid sat thinking about Shay the seahorse as well. She had been a few rows back from Shay and didn’t think anything of him. These meetings were always so long and boring. When a flipper had risen confidently into the air, Lulu had been shocked! Nobody had ever put forth an idea, let alone at the beginning of the meeting. Lulu’s mind brimmed with thoughts. One particular one stood out to her: “Why had nobody ever seen or heard of Shay before?”

That’s a wrap for part 1! What do you think of the story? I am open to any feedback or suggestions you might have. Let me know if you would like to see more Creative Challenges and/or part 2 of Under The Sea!!

Thanks for reading and look out for more Creative Challenges.

Creative Challenges: Watching Me

Hi everyone! It’s Monday and that means nobody wants to get up. At least it’s Creative Challenge Monday! If you are unfamiliar with this event, go to it’s info page here.

Today’s prompt: “He was always watching me. That dog, always watching me.” That is the first line of your story.

My Story:

He was always watching me. That dog always watching me; Sam Smith thought  to himself as he stared at the small Dalmatian. He had been practicing for his basketball game tomorrow. Getting awfully tired, he turned around and noticed that Dalmatian covered in dirt and watching him. It wasn’t the first time he had encountered the dog. The first time was on a cool Fall day when he had been spending time with his friends Greg and Freddy at Central Park. The Dalmatian had come bounding up to them and started nosing the soccer ball they had been kicking around. Greg and Freddy had loved the dog and thought that he belonged to Sam. Sam thought about that as he sat on the front step of his apartment building.

“Sammy!” His grandma Lisa yelled in delight and Sam sighed. The Dalmatian made a run for it just has Lisa waddled around the corner with her arms full of gifts.

“Hi Grandma.” He muttered as he looked around nonchalantly for the Dalmatian.

“Can yeh help meh with these her gifts sweetie?”

“Yes Grandma Lisa.” Sam sighed again and got up off the step and walked over to help his Grandma. They walked up the stairs to the Smith’s apartment, both with their arms filled with gifts and bags.

“Grandma!” Sam’s sister Jessi exclaimed with delight as Lisa swooped her up in a big hug.

“Hi Sweetie! I’ve brought you and Sammy some gifts.”

“Hi Mom!” Sam and Jessi’s mom came down the hall clutching her round stomach. She’s  8 months pregnant with baby #3; a little boy.

“Hi Darla! How’s the baby doing?”

“He’s been kicking like crazy! Been keeping me up late into the night.”

“I bet he’s going to be a big boy like his big brother.” Grandma Lisa said while smiling warmly at Sam. Sam blushed profusely and excused himself to go take out the trash.  Down the stairs he walked skipping stairs whenever he could. “BANG!” The sound echoed down the alley. Sam wiped his sweaty forehead and glanced at the row of bushes at the end of the alley. No sign of the Dalmatian. Sam ran back up to the apartment to see Jessi unwrapping a new book all about horses with several other gifts piled beside her. Grandma Lisa smiled and his mom smiled as he placed his hand on her stomach. He jumped as the baby’s tiny foot hit his hand. Sitting down on the couch between his mom and Grandma, Sam glanced out the window. Peering up at him was the Dalmatian who seemed to wink at him. Sam grinned and winked back.

Creative Challenges: She Stole Your Heart

Hey everyone. It’s Monday and also time for Creative Challenge Monday. I have decided that I will only be doing one of these a week especially since Cynthia Dawn who runs the event, has stopped sending them out. If you’re unfamiliar with the weekly event, check out my new event about page here.

Today’s prompt: She came into your life. Tell this story.

My Story:

Flynn put his clothes into the dryer and sighed. It had been a tough week and on top of that, his mom had refused to do his clothes.

“You’re 22 Flynn. I think you can wash your own clothes now.” She had said while shoving a trash bag full of clothes and some change at him. So here he was, at 9 o’clock at night in the practically empty laundromat. Leaning against the dryer, Flynn checked his Twitter feed. After scrolling through some tweets, the door bell rang and in walked the prettiest girl he had ever seen. Her brown hair flowed down her back. Her blue eyes scanned the room and landed on his. She fittled with her New York Giants sweatshirt. She dragged a huge bag of clothes into the quiet room and started her clothes.

Every so often, she would look up and wink at him. After 20 minutes of acting like they weren’t trying to flirt, Flynn gathered up the courage and walked over.

“Hi. What’s your name?” Flynn whispered. He could feel his cheeks turning pink.

“Hi! My name’s Beth!” The beautiful girl says with quiet enthusiasm.

“You’re pretty!” Flynn blurts out. He covers his mouth. She giggles.

“You’re pretty handsome yourself.” She says in a flirty voice. Suddenly his dryer dinged and the world came crashing down. He would be late for dinner if he didn’t head home soon. Beth must have caught him looking towards his dryer because she whispered

“Here’s my number Flynn. Maybe we can hang out sometime.” She winked and handed him a piece of paper. She must have scribbled down the number when he was looking at her silky hair. His hand shaked as he grabbed the paper.

“Bye Flynn!” Beth yelled as he slowly left the laundromat.

“Bye!” He yelled back while smiling happily.

Creative Challenges: One Piece Remains

Hey everyone. Today’s Monday. It’s time for Creative Challenges. I can’t guarantee that I’ll get out a 2nd one but I will definitely try. If you want more info about this twice weekly event check out the link here.

Today’s Prompt: They’ve destroyed everything but one piece remains. Tell the story.

My Story:

Sam sat on a bench in Central Park. His hair is messy. His hands dirty but soft. His wife suddenly filled for divorce. She took the kids, pets, and house. Nothing else else remains but one thing. His job. Sam loves being a veterinarian. Sure, he has to put some to sleep. Telling the families the news makes his heart break into millions of pieces every time. He has been a veternarian since before he met Darla. Tears glisten in his eyes as he remembers when his childhood dog passed away. Nothing could replace Willy. Sam also has just realized that he has no where to sleep. Getting up from his rain stricken bench, he slowly lopes to the bus stop. He luckily isn’t short on money. On the bus he stares at his sorry expression. Dr.Mac would really be surprised to see him in such a sorry state. He gets off the bus at a little hotel. At the desk sits a beautiful red head. Her hair covers her eyes. She’s sorting through some papers. She looks up and flashes Sam a toothy grin. Sam feels himself blush and he knows that he might be okay. Her name tag says “Kayla.” He falls asleep in his soft bed thinking of her ocean blue eyes.

Creative Challenges: At This Moment…

Hey everyone! Time for Creative Challenge #2! If you are unfamiliar with this twice weekly event then here’s the run down: Creative Challenges is a weekly event that happens every Tuesday and Friday. One of them is for everyone, and the other is for email subscribers only. The amazing Cynthia Dawn runs this event. She sends out these creative challenges by email or on her blog. She sends out a prompt and all you have to do is take the prompt and write a story either based off of a personal experience or as I do, with a fictional character.

Prompt #2: This moment something is going to happen. You’re waiting for it. What is it?

My Story:

Leo Wallis feels a laugh ripple through him. He’s sitting with his girlfriend Rylee. There both 22 and have so much in common. That must be why they’ve been dating for 2 years and spending time together even longer. That’s why he knows this is the moment. His heart skips a beat and he can feel his palms sweating. He’s so excited but nervous at the same time. “Will she say yes?” Is flying through his mind over and over again. Leo pauses and takes a moment to take in the scene. He doesn’t ever want to forget this moment. They’re at their favorite park. A baby is crying in the distance. A kid runs by laughing as his father chases him. A group of teenage girls sit and gossip at a group of tables across the path. So much is going on but for Leo, the world is frozen. It’s time. The whole world is waiting and he’s ready. He slowly pulls the ring box out of his pocket. Rylee looks his way and suddenly tears start to well up in his eyes. He can see him spending the rest of his life with her. He gets down on one knee and says “Rylee.. Will you Marry me?” Suddenly the world comes to a stop. The baby stops crying, the kid stops, the teenagers are smiling their way. Everything is perfect.

YES! YES!” Rylee screams with joy. Leo hugs her and hears applause erupt around them. Tears run down their cheeks. Leo will never forget this moment. Neither will Rylee Wallis.

Creative Challenges: So Far Gone.

Hello everyone! It’s Creative Challenge Day. If you are unfamiliar with Creative Challenges, here’s the gist: Creative Challenges is a twice weekly event that is hosted by Cynthia Dawn. Cynthia sends out two prompts by email every week. One is for everyone, and the other is for email subscribers only. All you have to do is take the prompt and write a story. The story can either be based off a personal experience or like I do, using a fictional character.

Prompt: His life wasn’t always like this. How did he get here?

My Story:

Paco Hernandez stands alone. His barefeet are covered in bruises and dirt. His clothes are tattered and gritty. Paco’s red hair is in a knotted mess and pointing in several directions. His only belongings are his dog Lupe and a ratty old sleeping bag. His hands have many cuts from holding the cardboard sign. Yes, Paco is homeless. But he hasn’t always been. His life was once wonderful. He was married to a loving wife named Darla. They had three kids named Maribel, José, and Carmen. Darla filed for divorce 5 years ago and took their kids with her. She sold the house and left him on the street. Once his boss heard he didn’t have a home anymore, he was fired when he came to work barefoot and dirty. Now he lived on whatever food he could find. Paco is awfully skinny and his dog’s fur is matted and needs to be groomed. Nobody gives Paco money. It could be because of his mean expression. Maybe they think he’s like the others who turn the money into alcohol and cigarettes. All he needs is some money to get by. But nobody will help him. So there he sits. On the corner of 6th and Main, holding his sign while car after car drives by.

Creative Challenges: Haunted by Pirates

It’s time for  more Creative Challenges! If you are unfamiliar with this event, here’s the gist: Creative Challenges is a twice weekly event that is hosted by Cynthia Dawn. One challenge is for everyone and the other is for her email subscribers only. She emails you a prompt and all you do is write a story based on a personal experience or like I do, using a fictional character.

My Story:

Harper Willis has quite a strange secret. He’s only in 1st grade and he’s haunted by pirates. He’s the only one that knows. His sister Savanna and brother Max are clueless. If he told his mom Alice and his dad Fredrick, they would think that he’s crazy. It all started one day when he was surfing the web. Harper’s not normally aloud to do that but when his sister Savanna is babysitting, anything goes. He was watching a video about elephants, his favorite animal, when a strange video popped up. Screams erupted from the computer into his headphones and he felt shivers run down his spine. A burly man with along hair and many scars popped up before him and he resisted the urge to scream. His palms were sweating waterfalls. The pirate captain who preferred to be called Scar told him that he better watch his back. One wrong move and..     more screams erupted into Harper’s ears. Tears were running down his cheeks by that time and he was shaking like nothing else. Scar let out a loud evil laugh and smashed something on the ground. It shattered and then the screen went blank. Harper ran up to his room and hid under his covers until he stopped shaking. Every once in a while late at night, Harper can hear that same loud evil laugh seemingly close by. He hides under his covers, for he knows that Scar and his crew are watching him.

Creative Challenges: Celebration.

Hello everyone! Happy Labor Day. This is today’s second Creative Challenge. If you are new to this weekly event or want to see Cynthia Dawn (the creator of the event’s) version of the prompt then click here.

Today’s Prompt: Write about a celebration.

With these prompts, you can either write a story based on a personal experience or one using a fictional character like I do.

My Story:

Today is my 16th birthday. My name is Savanna Willis and today I am having a music themed birthday. I get to invite 20 of my best friends. The only downside is that my annoying brothers Max and Harper have to be there because as my mom says “family is automatically invited.” I don’t agree with that but I don’t get a say in anything sibling related. It’s 10 am and I’m getting on my beautiful purple sweater, green pants, and sky blue Uggs. My mom insisted that I dressed up a little bit. I stand in front of my full length mirror and brush out my wavy red hair. It’s such a pain in the neck sometimes.

After braiding my hair as best as I can I walk down the winding stairs to find all my friends and family crowded in the living room. “SURPRISE!!!” Everyone yells and I feel a smile spreading across my face. My little brother Harper comes tottering over with my not so younger brother following him. “Happy Bwirthday!” Harper says with a little toothless grin. He’s lost a few teeth already and he’s only in Preschool. “Thank you Harper!” I say gathering him up in a big hug. He giggles and I start to laugh. I set him down and he runs off to play trains with my friend’s siblings. “Hi!, Hey!” I say to each of my friends in turn and then again to my family. Grandma Martha gives me a big kiss and I blush. Aunt Susan pinches my cheeks and I laugh. Uncle Dan gives me one of his famous bear hugs and I feel so warm and happy inside.

We all eat foods like macaroni and cheese, potato salad, and cornbread, along with some of my other favorites. When it comes to cake time I smile at everyone in turn as they sing “Happy Birthday” to me. I close my eyes and make a wish. *Woosh!* I blow out all the candles and everyone applauds. We all eat the delicious Chocolate cake with strawberry filling and chocolate frosting. Next comes presents. My mom gives me a present and from the tears in her eyes I know who it’s from. My dad passed away after battling colon cancer. We had no idea he was suffering until it was way too late. I can feel tears starting to flow down my cheeks as I slowly rip open the present. Inside is the keys to a Honda Civic. I squeal and all my friends crowd around me. I open all of the presents. I get some phone accessories, earrings, make up, ITunes cards, and a picture of my father and I. Of course I got more but all I can think about is that letter he wrote that came with the keys. He must have known that he wasn’t going to be around for my 16th birthday. I look around at all my friends and family and feel a tear run down my face. I don’t deserve all of these people who love and care about me. I’m glad they’re here to celebrate with me. I know that Dad even popped in a few times. This is by far the best birthday I’ve ever had.

Thanks for reading and Stay tuned for next Monday when Creative Challenge Day will come again 🙂

Creative Challenges: A Strange Fog.

Happy Monday! Or Tuesday, or whatever day it is for you. Today is Labour Day and for me that means no school today! I will be posting a few times today and will also be prewriting some awesome posts that you will receive sometime this week. If you are new to this weekly event, I suggest that you check out this link here to learn about the weekly event hosted by Cynthia Dawn and to see her take on the prompt.

Today’s prompt: Write about being stuck in a strange fog.

You can either write a story using the prompt based on a personal experience, or like I do, using a fictional character.

My Story:

Hello my name is Max Willis. All day I’ve been out with all my buddies like Jack and Kyle. First we went to Sweet Sally’s for some milkshakes. Sweet Sally’s has the best milkshakes in all of New Orleans. I ordered my usual Vanilla milkshake with Oreo crumbs sprinkled evenly on top. The bill ended up being a hefty 95 dollars because of the 10 people in our group. We also have quite the appetite so most of us had a burger and fries along with our milkshake. Once we left stuffed to the bone after paying, Jack suggested with travel a ways out to Jackson. I had never been there but knew that it was almost an hour away.

All the guys got all riled up but I felt a shiver run up my spine. What would my mom think? If I didn’t make it back by dinner she would have a fit! It was only 3:40 according to my sweet Timex watch. Dinner wasn’t till 6:00 so we could get to Jackson and hang around for a while. I heard that there’s a donut shop called Dave’s Donuts that has the best donuts around. My friend Casson is 15 so he has his driving permit. He technically wasn’t supposed to have any friends with him yet while he’s driving but he’s quite the rule breaker. Which is why I don’t see why perfect Molly Kay is into him. Anyway, only 7 of us could fit in his old minivan so a few of us had to bike. I was one of them. I could feel my palms starting to sweat. I had no idea where Jackson was but I figured that I could just follow Casson and the boys.

We started off at 4:05. I should have known that I was going to be very late to dinner. Of course, I was in the moment and not thinking about that. After 40 minutes of winding roads i realized that I couldn’t see Casson’s baby barf green minivan anymore. All around me a strange fog was wrapping me up in a inescapable blanket. I looked over my shoulder but I didn’t see Daniel or Leo behind me. I replayed the last time I saw them and the van. I facepalmed when I realized that I went straight, continuing on Red Fir Road while everyone else turned off onto Cascade Street. I would’ve noticed but I was too busy jamming and singing along to AC/DC and Queen.

The fog continued to swirl around me. My head started to throb and my vision started to sway. I quickly pulled out my iPhone but there was no service. “Duh” I was in the middle of the dark and dangerous woods. My Timex watch flashed 5:30. I knew that I was lost and wasn’t going to be home in time for dinner. In the strange fog I started to see weird glowing shapes and knew that this wasn’t any ordinary fog. This fog was starting to lift me up out of my red bicycle seat. Who knew if I would ever see my friends again. Or my family. My body started to go numb and I started seeing weird colors flash before my eyes. My last thought was “I don’t know if I’ll ever get home” The world faded to black and I felt a strange feeling in my chest. I felt a hand grab my arm and I opened my mouth to scream. But nothing came out. I was stuck in a dark and silent world. I should’ve stayed home.

Thanks for reading and stay tuned for more!

Creative Challenges: Life’s Speeding Past.

Hi everyone! Tomorrow I start school so my posting schedule is going to be changing. I can’t believe how fast the summer went! Today is Creative Challenge Day 🙂 If you are not familiar with Creative Challenges, then here’s a run through: Creative Challange is a weekly challenge run by Cynthia Dawn. You can check out her blog here. Creative Challenges happens every Tuesday and Friday and is received by email. One challenge is for everyone and the other is exclusively for her email subscribers. Cynthia simply sends you a prompt and you make a story using a personal experience or like I do, a story with a fictional character.

Today’s prompt: Life is Speeding past you. How do you keep up?

My Story:

The name’s Max, Max Willis. I’m just your average middle school boy. Crazy, obnoxious, and sports crazy. I play baseball for the school team. The New Orleans Raptors. I’m the star pitcher. My sister Savanna plays volleyball for the New Orleans Newts. Don’t ask me why the chose a name like that for a volleyball team! Savanna and I love to volunteer at the local library by shelving books. Savanna’s a total bibliophile. Me, I think I’ll stick to my comics. As you can imagine, life has really been speeding by. Summer’s already over and tomorrow I’m starting 8th grade. Savanna’s starting 10th, and our little brother Harper is starting preschool. Of course our mom is babying him way more then she needs to.

I have all my school supplies ready and by my mom’s orders, my outfit for tomorrow laid out. Oops I guess I forgot to mention that I already have started playing football and have practice after school tomorrow. I have no idea how I’m going to juggle volunteering, homework, school, football practice… The list goes on and on. Life is just going by too quickly. It seems like just yesterday, Harper was learning to walk. Now he’s on his way to preschool to make some friends.

MAX! DINNER TIME!” Oops I better get going. Mom’s making her famous baked potato salad and I wouldn’t miss it for the world. Rushing down the carpeted stairs, I pause to check out my new hair cut. Hopefully Zoe will dig my new do!

“Ughhhhhh, Max! How slow can you be? My sister Savanna is almost 16 and she acts like it. Her phone is always in her right hand. She’s always texting her friend Sarah; and of course her boyfriend Chris. Mom doesn’t like us writing at dinner. See you soon!

Finally I’m back! Mom got me a calendar to hang on my wall. She told me to use it to organize my week. Savanna just rolled her eyes. She has everything organized down to her sock drawer. I guess that’s how I’ll keep up with my crazy life. My brother Harper already has an admirer. Figures, he’s been a ladies man since he started going to daycare at 2 months. My life is a crazy whirlwind of activity, but now I can keep up thanks to my mom and her clearance shopping.

Thanks for Reading and Stay tuned for next week’s  Creative Challenge Day that takes place every Monday.
