Book Review| More Happy Than Not

Hey everyone! It’s Monday and it’s time for another book review. This is one I should’ve done week’s ago. It’s More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera. It’s a young adult book. Let’s get started!

Title: More Happy Than Not

Image result

Author: Adam Silvera

Image result for Adam Silvera

Genre: Young Adult

# of pages: 304 pages

My Rating: 4.5/5 stars

Goodreads Rating: 4.1/5 stars

Amazon Rating: 4.4/5 stars

Amazon Summary:

In the months after his father’s suicide, it’s been tough for sixteen-year-old Aaron Soto to find happiness again—but he’s still gunning for it. With the support of his girlfriend Genevieve and his overworked mom, he’s slowly remembering what that might feel like. But grief and the smile-shaped scar on his wrist prevent him from forgetting completely.

When Genevieve leaves for a couple of weeks, Aaron spends all his time hanging out with this new guy, Thomas. Aaron’s crew notices, and they’re not exactly thrilled. But Aaron can’t deny the happiness Thomas brings or how Thomas makes him feel safe from himself, despite the tensions their friendship is stirring with his girlfriend and friends. Since Aaron can’t stay away from Thomas or turn off his newfound feelings for him, he considers turning to the Leteo Institute’s revolutionary memory-alteration procedure to straighten himself out, even if it means forgetting who he truly is.

Why does happiness have to be so hard?

My Thoughts:

More Happy Than Not is a great book! The characters are detailed so you feel like you know them. There’s lots of action and twists and turns to the story. Aaron, the main character has had some pretty tough moments in his life. He has a girlfriend name Genevive. When Genevive leaves for camp, Aaron meets a boy named Thomas who he spends time with a lot. What happens next? I’m not going to spoil anything! This is definitely worth the read.

That’s a wrap! Have you read More Happy Than Not? Let me know what your thoughts are on the book.

Thanks for reading and stay tuned for more book reviews!

Genre: Contemporary; Young Adult

# of pages: 304

My Rating: 4.5/5  stars

Goodreads Rating: 3.8/5 stars

Amazon Rating: 4/5 stars

Amazon Summary:

An anxiety disorder disrupts fourteen-year-old Audrey’s daily life. She has been making slow but steady progress with Dr. Sarah, but when Audrey meets Linus, her brother’s gaming teammate, she is energized. She connects with him. Audrey can talk through her fears with Linus in a way she’s never been able to do with anyone before. As their friendship deepens and her recovery gains momentum, a sweet romantic connection develops, one that helps not just Audrey but also her entire family.

My Thoughts:

I generally loved Finding Audrey. Audrey is such a great character. She has realistic real life problems.  She struggles so much and it can be relatable for those with  an anxiety disorder and/or depression. All the characters are so detailed that I feel like I know them. Linus, her brother’s friend is a brilliant character. He really believes in Audrey. Even when she has a total panic attack, he isn’t scared away. This book is full of life changing moments for both Audrey and her family. The only part that was the least bit unlikeable was the ending. It seemed too “happily ever after” for me. Overall, It’s such a touching book and definitely worth the read. There’s even a bit of suspense 🙂

That’s a wrap! What are your thoughts on Finding Audrey? Let me know! *NO SPOILERS PLEASE)

Thanks for reading and stay tuned for more book reviews!

Creative Challenges: Celebration.

Hello everyone! Happy Labor Day. This is today’s second Creative Challenge. If you are new to this weekly event or want to see Cynthia Dawn (the creator of the event’s) version of the prompt then click here.

Today’s Prompt: Write about a celebration.

With these prompts, you can either write a story based on a personal experience or one using a fictional character like I do.

My Story:

Today is my 16th birthday. My name is Savanna Willis and today I am having a music themed birthday. I get to invite 20 of my best friends. The only downside is that my annoying brothers Max and Harper have to be there because as my mom says “family is automatically invited.” I don’t agree with that but I don’t get a say in anything sibling related. It’s 10 am and I’m getting on my beautiful purple sweater, green pants, and sky blue Uggs. My mom insisted that I dressed up a little bit. I stand in front of my full length mirror and brush out my wavy red hair. It’s such a pain in the neck sometimes.

After braiding my hair as best as I can I walk down the winding stairs to find all my friends and family crowded in the living room. “SURPRISE!!!” Everyone yells and I feel a smile spreading across my face. My little brother Harper comes tottering over with my not so younger brother following him. “Happy Bwirthday!” Harper says with a little toothless grin. He’s lost a few teeth already and he’s only in Preschool. “Thank you Harper!” I say gathering him up in a big hug. He giggles and I start to laugh. I set him down and he runs off to play trains with my friend’s siblings. “Hi!, Hey!” I say to each of my friends in turn and then again to my family. Grandma Martha gives me a big kiss and I blush. Aunt Susan pinches my cheeks and I laugh. Uncle Dan gives me one of his famous bear hugs and I feel so warm and happy inside.

We all eat foods like macaroni and cheese, potato salad, and cornbread, along with some of my other favorites. When it comes to cake time I smile at everyone in turn as they sing “Happy Birthday” to me. I close my eyes and make a wish. *Woosh!* I blow out all the candles and everyone applauds. We all eat the delicious Chocolate cake with strawberry filling and chocolate frosting. Next comes presents. My mom gives me a present and from the tears in her eyes I know who it’s from. My dad passed away after battling colon cancer. We had no idea he was suffering until it was way too late. I can feel tears starting to flow down my cheeks as I slowly rip open the present. Inside is the keys to a Honda Civic. I squeal and all my friends crowd around me. I open all of the presents. I get some phone accessories, earrings, make up, ITunes cards, and a picture of my father and I. Of course I got more but all I can think about is that letter he wrote that came with the keys. He must have known that he wasn’t going to be around for my 16th birthday. I look around at all my friends and family and feel a tear run down my face. I don’t deserve all of these people who love and care about me. I’m glad they’re here to celebrate with me. I know that Dad even popped in a few times. This is by far the best birthday I’ve ever had.

Thanks for reading and Stay tuned for next Monday when Creative Challenge Day will come again 🙂

Creative Challenges: A Strange Fog.

Happy Monday! Or Tuesday, or whatever day it is for you. Today is Labour Day and for me that means no school today! I will be posting a few times today and will also be prewriting some awesome posts that you will receive sometime this week. If you are new to this weekly event, I suggest that you check out this link here to learn about the weekly event hosted by Cynthia Dawn and to see her take on the prompt.

Today’s prompt: Write about being stuck in a strange fog.

You can either write a story using the prompt based on a personal experience, or like I do, using a fictional character.

My Story:

Hello my name is Max Willis. All day I’ve been out with all my buddies like Jack and Kyle. First we went to Sweet Sally’s for some milkshakes. Sweet Sally’s has the best milkshakes in all of New Orleans. I ordered my usual Vanilla milkshake with Oreo crumbs sprinkled evenly on top. The bill ended up being a hefty 95 dollars because of the 10 people in our group. We also have quite the appetite so most of us had a burger and fries along with our milkshake. Once we left stuffed to the bone after paying, Jack suggested with travel a ways out to Jackson. I had never been there but knew that it was almost an hour away.

All the guys got all riled up but I felt a shiver run up my spine. What would my mom think? If I didn’t make it back by dinner she would have a fit! It was only 3:40 according to my sweet Timex watch. Dinner wasn’t till 6:00 so we could get to Jackson and hang around for a while. I heard that there’s a donut shop called Dave’s Donuts that has the best donuts around. My friend Casson is 15 so he has his driving permit. He technically wasn’t supposed to have any friends with him yet while he’s driving but he’s quite the rule breaker. Which is why I don’t see why perfect Molly Kay is into him. Anyway, only 7 of us could fit in his old minivan so a few of us had to bike. I was one of them. I could feel my palms starting to sweat. I had no idea where Jackson was but I figured that I could just follow Casson and the boys.

We started off at 4:05. I should have known that I was going to be very late to dinner. Of course, I was in the moment and not thinking about that. After 40 minutes of winding roads i realized that I couldn’t see Casson’s baby barf green minivan anymore. All around me a strange fog was wrapping me up in a inescapable blanket. I looked over my shoulder but I didn’t see Daniel or Leo behind me. I replayed the last time I saw them and the van. I facepalmed when I realized that I went straight, continuing on Red Fir Road while everyone else turned off onto Cascade Street. I would’ve noticed but I was too busy jamming and singing along to AC/DC and Queen.

The fog continued to swirl around me. My head started to throb and my vision started to sway. I quickly pulled out my iPhone but there was no service. “Duh” I was in the middle of the dark and dangerous woods. My Timex watch flashed 5:30. I knew that I was lost and wasn’t going to be home in time for dinner. In the strange fog I started to see weird glowing shapes and knew that this wasn’t any ordinary fog. This fog was starting to lift me up out of my red bicycle seat. Who knew if I would ever see my friends again. Or my family. My body started to go numb and I started seeing weird colors flash before my eyes. My last thought was “I don’t know if I’ll ever get home” The world faded to black and I felt a strange feeling in my chest. I felt a hand grab my arm and I opened my mouth to scream. But nothing came out. I was stuck in a dark and silent world. I should’ve stayed home.

Thanks for reading and stay tuned for more!
