1. Side Effects May Vary by Julie Murphy-Teen

Side Effects May Vary

What if you’d been living your life as if you were dying—only to find out that you had your whole future ahead of you?

When sixteen-year-old Alice is diagnosed with leukemia, her prognosis is grim. To maximize the time she does have, she vows to spend her final months righting wrongs—however she sees fit. She convinces her friend Harvey, who she knows has always had feelings for her, to help her with a crazy bucket list that’s as much about revenge (humiliating her ex-boyfriend and getting back at her archnemesis) as it is about hope (doing something unexpectedly kind for a stranger). But just when Alice’s scores are settled, she goes into remission.

Now Alice is forced to face the consequences of all that she’s said and done, as well as her true feelings for Harvey. But has she caused irreparable damage to the people around her—and to the one person who matters most?

Julie Murphy’s Side Effects May Vary is a fearless and moving tour de force about love, life, and facing your own mortality.

2. Stormwalker by Mike Revell-Young Teen

Stormwalker

Ever since his mother died, 11-year-old Owen has felt lost. He’s drifting apart from his dad, his grades are dropping, and the only thing keeping him sane are the soccer trials coming up.

Then, in the middle of school one day, he is sucked out of real life and thrown into a desolate alternative world, a largely deserted wasteland where a menacing storm of Darkness plagues the city, threatening his life and the lives of the people who dwell there.

Terrifying as this new world is, Owen recognizes it–his dad is an author, and this is the setting of his new novel. Fueled by his grief over the loss of his mom, Owen’s dad has conjured a world so real and so fraught that Owen is transported to it every time his dad sets pen to paper. And he has to live out every word in the story.

But each jump devours chunks of his real life. Owen misses days of school, and even a key soccer game that threatens his chances of having a shot at appearing in the tryouts at all. Owen desperately wants these events to stop, but doesn’t want to plunge his dad any further into the well of unhappiness that threatens to drown them both.

With social services threatening to ship Owen off to his aunt’s house and his school career spiraling out of control, what if finishing the story and battling the Darkness is the only way Owen can save himself . . . and his dad?

3. Big Game by Stuart Gibbs-Young Teen

Big Game (FunJungle #3)

When someone takes aim at Rhonda Rhino, FunJungle’s pregnant (and endangered) Asian greater one-horned rhinoceros, the zoo steps up security measures in order to protect this rare animal and her baby.

But the extra security isn’t enough;someone is still getting too close for comfort. Teddy and company start to suspect that whoever is after Rhonda is really after her horn, which is worth a lot of money on the black market.

For the first time ever, the head of the zoo enlists Teddy for help; for once, he doesn’t have to sneak around in order to investigate, and the results are even more wacky, and even more dangerous, than ever before.

4. Five Days Of Famous By Alyson Noel-Young Teen

Five Days of Famous

A dream is a wish your heart makes . . . when your life is in desperate need of a makeover. Nick Dashaway would know. Either he makes it big this year in seventh grade or he risks being a nobody forever.
Enter the Greentree Middle School Talent Show, hosted by teen sensation Josh Frost. The show might just be Nick s ticket out of loserville. But popularity doesn’t come easy, and when Nick is forcibly ejected from the stage, he feels like he s out of options. Desperate to avoid a permanent seat at the geek table and continued inattention from the love of his life, Nick chooses the only option he has left: he makes a wish.

“Be careful what you wish for, ” the old saying goes and Nick is about to find out why.

5.  The Raven Boys (The Raven Cycle #1) By Maggie Stiefvater

The Raven Boys (The Raven Cycle, #1)

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her. His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Gansey is different. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been told by her psychic family that she will kill her true love. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

6. Fans Of The Impossible Life By Kate Scelsa

Fans of the Impossible Life

Mira is starting over at Saint Francis Prep. She promised her parents she would at least try to pretend that she could act like a functioning human this time, not a girl who can’t get out of bed for days on end, who only feels awake when she’s with Sebby.

Jeremy is the painfully shy art nerd at Saint Francis who’s been in self-imposed isolation after an incident that ruined his last year of school. When he sees Sebby for the first time across the school lawn, it’s as if he’s been expecting this blond, lanky boy with mischief glinting in his eye.

Sebby, Mira’s gay best friend, is a boy who seems to carry sunlight around with him. Even as life in his foster home starts to take its toll, Sebby and Mira together craft a world of magic rituals and impromptu road trips, designed to fix the broken parts of their lives.

As Jeremy finds himself drawn into Sebby and Mira’s world, he begins to understand the secrets that they hide in order to protect themselves, to keep each other safe from those who don’t understand their quest to live for the impossible.

This is a simple but amazing tag!

What I Love About Me:

  1. My hair!

I’m a ginger and love my hair color so much. Even though it’s wild and crazy, I still love it!

I’m still in school. Most bloggers are juggling work or a family. I’m juggling homework and school. My will to learn has always been strong. I don’t enjoy every subject. If I can find one I enjoy, I put everything I’ve got into it. I love how there’s never too much knowledge I can consume.

I have smaller hands than most people. I love that they make me unique. My small hands make me who I am.

I love them because they help me see! That may seem cheesy but I have terrible eye sight for my age. I’m only a teenager but have eye sight equal to an elderly man/women. Without my glasses, the world would be a blurry place.

I Messed Up Book Tag!

Hey everyone! It’s Monday and that means it’s Memorial Day. What are you doing to celebrate? Let me know! As you might’ve guessed by the title, I am doing the I Messed Up Book Tag. I was unofficially tagged by the amazing Catia @ The Girl Who Reads Too Much!  Go check her out! A shout out to anyone who has done this tag and also officially or unofficially tagged me for this. Thank you 🙂 Let’s get started!

1) A Character Appearance You Misread or Imagined Differently.

Oh gosh, I misread and imagine characters differently all the time. For the sake of this question though, I’m going to say… Hazel from TFIOS. I always pictured her differently.

2) A Character Name That You’ve Been Pronouncing Wrong.

This wasn’t too recently. When I recently read Harry Potter for the first time, I pronounced Hermione’s name wrong in my head.

3) An Overused Trope that is Your Guilty Pleasure.

I honestly had to look up trope. I realize that I have a thing for people following in love at first sight. I can’t get enough. It makes the story so adorable and amazing.

 4) A Cliché Character Type That You Like Better On Screen than Reading About:

I honestly have no idea. I don’t watch many book to film adaptions so I can’t honestly answer this.

5) A Word/Phase You Learned Because of It’s Use in a Book:

There are so many words/phases I’ve learned. One of them is Muggle from the Harry Potter series. This might not count since it’s not a “real” series but who cares?

6) Have You Ever Not Read or Completed a Required Reading Book for School?

I must be too much of a good student. I always complete every required book and stay right with the class. I also do all the required assignments that go with it.

 7) Have You Ever (or Wanted to) Skip a Chapter from the Point of View of a Charcter You Weren’t Interested In?

I don’t think this counts as a POV but I wanted to skip the fan fiction parts of Fangirl. I just wanted to get to more of Cath and Levi!

8) Have You Ever Cancelled Social Plans to Read a Book?

This is going to sound sad but no because I don’t normally have social plans 😦

What an awesome tag! Since I’m not good about remembering/knowing who has done this, I tag Everyone! You are all amazing people but everyone has messed up. Link your post of this in the comments so I can’t see what you’ve messed up on!

Thanks for reading and stay tuned for more tags! Happy Memorial Day 🙂

School Day Blues

Hi everyone! Since today is Sunday, I decided to do a School Day Blues poem. This poem was written last school year. The only thing that was changed was my name.

School Week Blues
By Makayla the Bookworm

I got the School Week Blues
Monday is just around the corner
I got the School Week Blues
Monday is leaving me some clues

It’s sayin’ you better watch out
You’re going to find out what I’m talkin’ about!
Quizzes at the end
You better hope your grades don’t go around the bend
School Week Blues

Yawn Yawn Yawn is all I do
Everybody knows that’s nothing new
I just want to scream
Someone better beam me to Mars
I just can’t take this School Week Blues!
The stress is eating at my brain
All I hear is this is easy
My brain protests as yet another math problem hits me like an asteroid
I try to fight the urge but it overtakes me
My pencil hits the desk with a click

The clock ticks like a bomb.
Deciding whether to go fast or slow
All I’m doing is counting the minutes, hours, and days till the weekend
My oasis just seems to be in the middle of the desert
The rest of the week is the sand
My throat is thirsty for those day where I can relax
Sleep
School Day Blues!
I feel so lonely in the middle of all those problems, tests, quizzes, and assignments.
Monday means waking up as sleepy as anything
Tuesday is better but the procrastination really starts
Wednesday means middle of the week and a step closer to freedom
Thursday means face palms and begging the world to stop stalling
Friday’s TGIF and celebration
Saturday means sleeping in and not doing any homework
Sunday is the dread of facing that brand new week and struggling to do homework
The week is a whirlwind of “why do I have to be here and get me on that summer plane ’cause this world needs to get a reality check!”

I dread that ring that signals the beginning of class
The endless crowd of teenagers sweeps me like a broom
Nobody knows what’s in store
Middle School comes with drama and stress
Not the best
Must I confess that this world has given me a slap in the face more than my share?
Let me out of this room.
School Day Blues
You better watch out!

Thanks for reading and let me know what you think!

Creative Challenges: Life’s Speeding Past.

Hi everyone! Tomorrow I start school so my posting schedule is going to be changing. I can’t believe how fast the summer went! Today is Creative Challenge Day 🙂 If you are not familiar with Creative Challenges, then here’s a run through: Creative Challange is a weekly challenge run by Cynthia Dawn. You can check out her blog here. Creative Challenges happens every Tuesday and Friday and is received by email. One challenge is for everyone and the other is exclusively for her email subscribers. Cynthia simply sends you a prompt and you make a story using a personal experience or like I do, a story with a fictional character.

Today’s prompt: Life is Speeding past you. How do you keep up?

My Story:

The name’s Max, Max Willis. I’m just your average middle school boy. Crazy, obnoxious, and sports crazy. I play baseball for the school team. The New Orleans Raptors. I’m the star pitcher. My sister Savanna plays volleyball for the New Orleans Newts. Don’t ask me why the chose a name like that for a volleyball team! Savanna and I love to volunteer at the local library by shelving books. Savanna’s a total bibliophile. Me, I think I’ll stick to my comics. As you can imagine, life has really been speeding by. Summer’s already over and tomorrow I’m starting 8th grade. Savanna’s starting 10th, and our little brother Harper is starting preschool. Of course our mom is babying him way more then she needs to.

I have all my school supplies ready and by my mom’s orders, my outfit for tomorrow laid out. Oops I guess I forgot to mention that I already have started playing football and have practice after school tomorrow. I have no idea how I’m going to juggle volunteering, homework, school, football practice… The list goes on and on. Life is just going by too quickly. It seems like just yesterday, Harper was learning to walk. Now he’s on his way to preschool to make some friends.

MAX! DINNER TIME!” Oops I better get going. Mom’s making her famous baked potato salad and I wouldn’t miss it for the world. Rushing down the carpeted stairs, I pause to check out my new hair cut. Hopefully Zoe will dig my new do!

“Ughhhhhh, Max! How slow can you be? My sister Savanna is almost 16 and she acts like it. Her phone is always in her right hand. She’s always texting her friend Sarah; and of course her boyfriend Chris. Mom doesn’t like us writing at dinner. See you soon!

Finally I’m back! Mom got me a calendar to hang on my wall. She told me to use it to organize my week. Savanna just rolled her eyes. She has everything organized down to her sock drawer. I guess that’s how I’ll keep up with my crazy life. My brother Harper already has an admirer. Figures, he’s been a ladies man since he started going to daycare at 2 months. My life is a crazy whirlwind of activity, but now I can keep up thanks to my mom and her clearance shopping.

Thanks for Reading and Stay tuned for next week’s  Creative Challenge Day that takes place every Monday.

School Year Blog Posting!

Hello everyone! As you know, the new school year is just around the corner. For some it is already underway. That means that my blogging schedule will be changing quite a lot. I have a bit of an idea when I will and won’t be posting. This schedule is not 100% foolproof and may change once I see how well it works.

Monday: Mondays will be Creative Challenge Days. I am very behind on creative challenges so this will give me the opportunity to both catch up and give you guys a day full of writing. A story from both the past Tuesday and Friday will be posted starting August 31st or this coming Monday.

image

Tuesday: I’ve found that Top Ten Tuesday’s are really fun and entertaining. These will continue to happen every Tuesday. It’s going to be tough to get them up since I have no idea how busy my days will be. It’ll be quite a problem since unlike the Creative Challenges, I can’t go and write them up ahead of time. These weekly memes are sent to me via email. I promise to do the best I can to get them on ASAP.

image

Wednesday: As always, Wednesdays will be my What I’m Reading Wednesday’s. I’ll continue to share amazing books with you that I have been reading. I will put my 100% into making sure that these posts have as good quality as they have up until now.

image

Thursday: Thursday I honestly have no scheduled blog posts. Thursday’s are the days that homework is the most plentiful. If I have an idea that I can fit into my day, I’ll post. If nothing comes to mind or I don’t have enough time or a prewritten post, There’ll be no posts on Thursday.

image

Friday: Just like Thursday, Friday’s are one of the days where I may not post. Friday is the end of the school week and is normally when I like to relax and have a bit of fun before tackling the homework load. There mY be a short or pre- written post. If not then no blog post for Friday.

image

Saturday: Saturday will be my big planning day. Starting this coming Saturday, I will be pre writing and planning out the upcoming posts for the week. I will most likely catch up on Tags and Awards or a random Book Review on this day.

image

Sunday: Sunday’s are the days where I procrastinate to. I spend Saturday and Sunday doing my homework. I may post on this day since I normally have some breathing room. It all depends on my spur of ideas.

image

I know this isn’t that exciting of a post but I tried to spice it up with some fun pictures!

Let me know below what you think of the new schedule!

Thanks for Reading and Stay tuned for more 😀
